Purpose of Job To develop proficiency in the use of social studies inquiry skills and concepts; to endeavor to motivate each pupil to understand and exercise his/her rights, privileges, and responsibilities as a citizen; to develop understanding of the geographical, historical, cultural, and political factors which influence the development of world regions; to encourage pupils to develop sound opinions based on study of facts concerning operation of political and economic systems.

Essential Duties And ResponsibilitiesThe following duties are normal for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all- inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Embeds the content standards of culture economics, geography, governance and civics, history, and contributions of groups and individuals in all social studies courses.
  • Embeds the process standards of reading, writing, speaking, and listening in all social studies
  • Develops and teaches balanced social studies courses involving factual background material, connections to current events, discussion time, inquiry, and other appropriate strategies and activities designed to encourage students to draw conclusions, make value judgments, improve interpersonal relationships, and engage in active citizenship.
  • Plans and guides discussion of current issues and problems against the background of geographical environment and history of the area being studied so that students can see the relevance of social studies to their lives.
  • Integrate social studies practices found in TN state standards for lessons.
  • Develops an understanding of the diverse and unique contributions of racial, religious, and political groups and/or individuals to American cultures and to world cultures.
  • Assists students in increasing their awareness of the complexity and interdependence of living in a global society.
  • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times
  • Plans a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.

Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions:

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or

Capability to develop and implement long-term goals. Knows how to keep abreast of any changes in statutes, policy, procedures and methods as they pertain to public education. Is able to effectively communicate and interact with subordinates, supervisors, members of the general public, and other groups involved in the operation of the school system. Is able to assemble information and make written reports and documents in a concise, clear, and effective manner. Has good organizational, management, interpersonal, and technical skills. Is able to use independent judgment and discretion in supervising subordinates, including the handling of emergency situations, determining and deciding upon procedures to be implemented, setting priorities, maintaining standards, and resolving problems.

(ADA) MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Physical RequirementsMust be physically able to operate a variety of office machines. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. Must be able to exert up to twenty pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to ten pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for active work. Must be able to lift and/or carry weight of twenty to forty pounds.

Verbal AptitudeRequires the ability to record and deliver information to supervisors and officials; to explain procedures and policies; and to follow verbal and written instructions, guidelines and objectives.

Numerical AptitudeRequires the ability to add and subtract totals; multiply and divide; determine percentages; determine time and weight; and utilize statistical inference.

Form/Spatial AptitudeRequires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape visually.

Manual DexterityRequires the ability to handle a variety of items, hand and power tools, office equipment, control knobs, switches, etc. Must have the ability to use both hands for twisting or turning. Must have high level of hand and eye coordination.
